What does being a first-generation student mean to you personally?

To me, being a first-generation student means creating and taking advantage of new opportunities that my family never had. It represents immense gratitude, knowing that I am paving the way for future generations. Being first generation motivates me to make the most of every opportunity I am given and to honor the sacrifices that made my education possible.

How did you feel about coming to college as a first-generation student?

When I first arrived at Florida State University, I felt both excited and uncertain. I knew I would have to navigate many aspects of college independently, but the support available to first-generation students made that transition smoother than I expected. What began as uncertainty quickly turned into confidence as I found my place and began to thrive academically and socially.

What resources, programs, or people at FSU have been most helpful to you?

The Herbert Wertheim College of Business Living-Learning Community (LLC) and the First- Generation Open House have been especially impactful during my time at FSU. Being part of the LLC has surrounded me with driven, like-minded peers from diverse backgrounds, along with supportive faculty who have helped me grow academically and professionally. Events such as the First-Generation Open House provided valuable opportunities to build relationships with department chairs, academic advisors and mentors who have supported me throughout my academic journey.

What is one accomplishment you are especially proud of at FSU?

One accomplishment I am especially proud of is earning a 4.0 GPA and being named to the President’s List during my first semester. That recognition reflected the discipline and work ethic I brought with me to FSU and strengthened during my time here. It set a strong foundation for my academic and professional goals moving forward.

What advice would you give to an incoming first-generation student?

Get involved early in clubs and organizations that align with your interests and career goals. Surround yourself with friends and mentors who challenge you and want to see you succeed. Building a strong community can shape your entire college experience and open doors you may not have known existed.

Anything else you’d like to share?

Being first-generation has strengthened my drive and determination to succeed. I use that identity as fuel to work at my highest potential and to lead by example for my peers and future generations. My journey is not just about personal achievement. It is about honoring where I came from and building toward where I am going.
